What does COVID-19 mean for Travel insurance?

If you have a holiday and/or business trip booked prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, you will no doubt be wondering whether the costs will be covered by insurers in the event you do not travel. This will depend on a number of deciding factors.

Travel insurance is primarily taken out to cover Medical Expenses incurred abroad and the risk of having to Cancellation or be cut short (there are other covers like lost baggage, flight delays, etc.) early as a result of illness/injury or a change in circumstances beyond your control.

So, what does COVID-19 outbreak mean to a typical travel insurance policy? Every policy differs considerably depending on insurer, level of cover chosen etc, so please note this is only a general overview. Principally, if you have to cancel your holiday due to a change in Foreign Commonwealth Office advice to either “Advice against all travel” or “Advice against all but essential travel” after the trip is booked and insurance purchased near to (usually within 48hrs of) departure, this will typically be covered under a travel policy subject to trying to reclaim any lost costs from your tour operator, travel or booking agent, accommodation and transport providers or bank and credit card provider, who will be able to provide you with specific advice on their travel plans, offer an alternative destination or offer refund of monies paid. Once checked and confirmed you are unable to get compensation for all their lost or additional costs, then we advise contacting us to make a claim.

Please note, the following are NOT typically covered
1. Disinclination to travel
2. Booking a holiday that was against Foreign Commonwealth Office advice at the time of booking and/or purchasing the policy after the FCO changed their advice
3. Travelling against FCO advice and falling ill whilst on your travels in relation to the Medical Expenses

If you have any questions regarding your policy and circumstances, we advise you contact us and we will review the facts of the matter on a case by case basis.
